Abstract

Absorption of nitric oxide into aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution was studied in a stirred tank reactor. The effect of various operation variables such as nitric oxide (NO) and sodium hypochlorite concentration, initial pH value, and reaction temperature etc. was critically examined. It was observed that the absorption process followed first-order kinetics with respect to both nitric oxide as well as sodium hypochlorite. Nitric oxide absorption reached to maxima when the initial pH value of aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution was taken 5.5 and thereafter absorption decreased slowly. The pre-exponential frequency factor and activation energy of absorption of nitric oxide into aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution were investigated and found to 7.96×108 m3/(mol s) and 28.15 kJ/mol respectively.
